Older people and diabetes 27 August 2015 Living with diabetes can be further complicated for older people by other chronic health conditions and issues associated with the ageing process. According to Diabetes Australia’s CEO, Prof Greg Johnson, more than 590,000 people registered on the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) are aged over 65 years or older. “With our aging population and increasing prevalence of diabetes the issue of managing diabetes in older people is becoming increasingly important,” he said. “Older people with diabetes as well as their family members, carers and health care workers need access to simple, understandable resources, relevant to this stage of life. “At this week’s Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australian Diabetes Society and the Australian Diabetes Educators of Association in Adelaide, we are proud to launch a new suite of resources for older people with diabetes to help them manage their diabetes as they age along side other health issues which may develop with age.” The resources include: • Older People: Managing Diabetes As You Age • Older People: You and Your Health Care Team “These National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) resources aim to address the need to improve self management in people living independently at home aged 65 years and over. The booklets complete a series of resources with the first booklet, Healthy Eating: A guide for older people, launched last December. The resources are available at: www.ndss.com.au or by contacting 1800 637 700 . The NDSS is an Australian Government initiative administered by Diabetes Australia.
