Diabetes Australia
The rising cost of living is having a serious impact on all Australians, including people living with diabetes. As essential goods and services become more expensive, many people are facing difficult choices about how to afford the health care they need.
All people living with diabetes should be able to afford the healthcare they need to live well. For some, affording the necessities like insulin, test strips, glucose monitors and insulin pumps, is becoming a huge challenge. We’re even hearing about people who are forced to ration their medicines due to high costs, leading to serious health risks and complications. This is not just a financial issue; it poses a serious threat to a person’s well-being.
The rising cost of healthy foods is also impacting dietary choices. Nutrient-dense foods, which are crucial for managing blood sugar levels, often come with a higher price tag. As budgets tighten, people resort to cheaper, less healthy options, which can exacerbate their condition and lead to long-term health complications.
On top of all this, is the impact that these cost of living choices can have on a person’s mental health. The stress of juggling bills while managing a chronic condition can lead to anxiety and depression.
The diabetes community needs real solutions to help ease the burden of the rising cost of living.
