Fruit and diabetes 9 December 2014 You may have seen a number of news stories about a new study which claims that fruit can help prevent diabetes, while fruit juice is associated with the risk of developing the disease. When it comes to healthy nutrition, our recommended beverage for everyone is water, while fruit is an important part of a healthy diet. An occasional half glass of fruit juice is also OK, as long as you don’t overdo it. Our great fact sheet ‘food choices for people with diabetes’, has some great advice about fruit: “Fruit – all types such as apples, oranges, peaches, bananas, melons. Fruit is a good source of fibre; try to eat the whole fruit rather than drinking the juice. Include at least 2 serves of fruit a day (1 serve = 1 medium piece apple, orange or pear OR 2 small kiwifruit or plums).†You can download this fact sheet for free from Diabetes NSW website by clicking here.
